Forest School (Beginning Spring 2): Tuesday
Welcome back Year 3! We hope you have had a lovely break and are ready to dive into some new and exciting topics this term. We can't wait to continue our learning journey with you all.
On our class page, you will be able to find information about this terms learning, including home learning projects and useful links to help you grow your knowledge and skills.
In English, we will begin the half-term by looking at Historical Fiction based on The Stone Age. Pupils will have the opportunity to explore the difference between fact and fiction within these texts, compare similarities and differences between the text, self and world, and use text and illustrations to develop their inference skills.
We will be exploring what life was like in the Stone Age by using our Forest School to create shelters and tools similar to those used in tribes. Pupils will use these to facilitate drama experiences to support descriptive and narrative writing.
The writing purposes this half-term are:
To entertain - we will be creating descriptive character and setting pieces and a historical narrative.
To inform - we will be creating letters and non-chronological reports.
Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar:
To support pupil's in their writing, the SPaG focuses within our English units will include:
- Identifying regular and irregluar plurals
- using adverbials of time and place
- use of exclamatory and interrogative sentences for effect
- difference between possession and omission when using apostrophes
Guided reading sessions, whole class reading sessions and our daily class read, will enable children to develop their reading skills and comprehension alongside an ever growing love of reading.
Please help your child by listening to them read / reading with them for 30 minutes each day. Please sign their reading record each night to share their reading journey with us. Pupils should bring reading records in daily for a member of staff to sign and change the book where necessary.
In Maths we will be looking at Multiplication & Division followed by Money, Statistics, Lenth & Perimeter and Fractions. Children will be challenged to apply the skills learnt to gain a deeper understanding of the application of mathematical concepts in the real world.
Keep learning your times tables - You should know your 2s, 5s and 10s from Year 2!
- Year 3 will focus on 3s, 4s and 8s.
Practise reading the time every day!
Home learning - Log on to TT Rockstars to practice those timestables and use Maths Seeds or MyMaths to further learning from class.
If your child cannot tell the time, please practice this with them before we start our unit in class.
In Science we will be learning about Forces and Magnets.
In RE this term, we will be looking at the Local Church community: journeys, the Eucharist and preparing for Lent and Easter.
In Topic, we will be focusing on developing our enquiry skills in History through finding out what it was like to live in The Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age. We will be learning about the changes that occurred between the middle Stone Age (Mesolithic Times) to the Iron Age - a period of over 10,000 years! We will also be looking at continuities within these periods (where there was little change).
As there were no written records for most of the period, archaeological records are very important. We will be investigating issues and solving historical questions considering the evidence our judgments and knowledge are based on.
Our historical enquiries will be based around:
1. What was 'new' about the New Stone Age?
2. Which was better, bronze or iron?
3. If you were Julius Caesar, would you have invaded Britain in 55BC?
4. When do you think it was better to live - Stone Age, Bronze Age or Iron Age?

In Art, we will be exploring cave paintings and using knowledge and skills gained to create our own.
Throughout the spring term we will be working through our module 'Created to Love Others'. Within this module we will cover three units, starting with religious understanding to support our learning of PSHE themes. We will then move onto the unit 'Personal Relationships' before exploring the third unit 'Keeping Safe'. For any further information please see the TenTen parent portal.
Children should come to school dressed in their full PE Kit (white t-shirt & blue shorts, trainers, jumper & tracksuit bottoms). Please note, some sessions may be in the hall and your child will need their indoor kit (white t-shirt and blue shorts) on these days. As we are in the winter season, children should come to school with their indoor kits underneath their joggers in order to keep warm during break times and lunch times.
Year 3 are beginning weekly swimming sessions on Thursday 13th January. 3P's swimming session is at 9.20am. We will be leaving promptly after registration, please ensure you are in school on time.
Clothing requirements for School Swimming are as follows:-
* Please note that in order for your child to benefit from the swimming lessons appropriate aquatic clothing must be worn. Should your children wish to wear items of clothing that cover up parts of the body, there are specific aquatic clothing designed for this purpose. Cotton leggings are detrimental to teaching and are a risk to health and safety.
No Bermuda or long shorts are allowed, as these can be dangerous - for reasons of safety the swimwear should be sufficiently tight fitting to allow the freedom of body and limb movement without causing unsafe water resistance.
Jewellery of any description should not be worn in the School Swimming lesson. It is important that earrings in particular are removed.
Goggles are only permitted for medical reasons. Parents must produce a letter from either a Doctor or Optician to state that your child has a medical condition and is required to wear goggles in the school swimming lesson.
Children have logins for Reading Eggs and Spelling Shed and should be going onto these websites regularly to practice their reading and spelling.
