Welcome to Year 6 2021/2022

 

 

 

Mr Usher, Mrs Hall and Mr Naughton would like to welcome you all to our year 6 web page.

 

We can't quite  believe it is the final year for your children but what a great year it will be.   

 

Our aim that all children will get an extremely well balanced as we understand the importance of learning opportunities that can be gained from delivering a broad curriculum. As part of maintaining our rich curriculum, your children will have many enrichment opportunities to reach out to the world around them through prayer, words, work and play.  

Curriculum Focus

Religion

 

At the beginning of the year, we  will be looking at how God loves us and how we show our love in return to God and how we should love one another unconditionally as stated in our mission statement.   We shall be learning on how others remember their dead and our main focus for our whole school collective worship will be Remembrance.  Towards the end of the term, we will be looking at Advent and how Jesus bought light into the World.

 

 

English

 

In English, we will be developing our reading, writing and grammar skills through our Macbeth unit. Here we will look at Shakespeare's careful, and beautiful, use of language and plot.  Through this children will work on audience, purpose and features of different types of text: letters, poetry and story.

Maths

 

In Maths, year six will begin the year by reflecting on their understanding of place value and applying their knowledge to solving reasoning problems.  After that, we will focusing on the four operations and BODMAS leading up to work on fractions.  

Topic

 

In our first term, we will  be focusing our studies on World War Two.  Pupils will have the opportunity to study the story of the war and how it affected the lives of people left at home.  The unit will encourage pupils to look for connections between all the other curriculum areas and see how they can apply their prior knowledge. 

Science

In Science, the children will be learning all about animals, including humans, We will learn  about the circulatory system and how we can affect how well it works.

1) Seesaw online homework

This year, instead of students completing a learning log they will be set a piece of homework using the website/ app Seesaw. Seesaw has been chosen because it is extremely easy to use and works on almost every single device, including phones. If your child does not have access to a laptop or tablet, then we recommend that students complete their work on paper and that an adult uses the Seesaw app on their phone (available in both Android and Apple app stores for free) to take a picture of their work. This gives students an excellent opportunity to view each other's work and leave positive comments for their classmates.

Homework will be uploaded onto Seesaw and reviewed every Thursday - please note that your child will be trained on how to do this in school. Homework can be completed on paper and an image of it can be uploaded to Seesaw. 2) Spelling 

Each week, Year 6 students will be set an assignment from Spelling Shed. They will be tested on this every Friday.

Each week, students will be set activities to complete online by their class teacher. These will be checked every Monday. 

 

4) Reading Logs and reading books

The children should keep their reading records up to date and will be expected to bring them in every Thursday even if they have not finished their book. This will allow us to monitor how much your child is reading at home. We would like parents listen to their child read, initial their reading record and to discuss their book with them at least once a week. We expect your child to read for a minimum of 30 minutes each evening. This will really help them to make good progress in all aspects of their English. 

 

5)Reading Eggs

Year six have been given access to the Reading Eggs App.  An assignment is set each week which we expect to be completed by Friday.

A: Yes they can. Students can bring water bottles into school on Monday and take them home on Friday for thorough cleaning. They must not be taken home during the week.

A: No. For hygiene reasons, we provide each student with their own stationary to keep in school. 

 

Q: What sort of face mask can a student wear?

Curriculum Overview

 

English

This term we will be looking at non-fiction text and poetry.  We begin by looking at the tragic story of the Titanic, using our reading strategies to discover why the Titanic sank and debating on who was to blame.  Pupils will write non-chronological report.

We then move on to the Flower.  Our children will have the opportunity to read this fantastic picture book,  then will turn this into a poem and a wonderful descriptive poem.

We will then work on our transition unit, 'The kid who came from space.'

 

We will continue to focus on handwriting and spelling.

 

Maths

During the summer term, we will be looking at taking a lot of Mathematics outside.  We will be using our blank playground grid to reflect shapes, translate shapes and draw line graphs.

 

RE

This term in RE, we will be studying the Pentecost- how it takes courage to be good witnesses  and how The Holy Spirit enables people the Easter message. We will then move onto study reconciliation focusing on the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.  

 

Topic

We will be studying the life of the Ancient Greeks - looking at how their civilisation has shaped our lives today.  Within this unit, the children will study the geography of Greece, experience how the Greeks lived and compare the Ancient Greeks to other civilisations.  

 

P.S.H.E.

Throughout the summer term we will be working through our module 'Created and loved by God'. Within this module we will cover four units, starting with religious understanding to support our learning of PSHE themes. We will then move onto the unit 'Me, My Body, My Health' before exploring the third unit 'Emotional Wellbeing'. We will finish the summer term looking at our final unit of 'Life Cycles'. Science

We will be studying evolution and inheritance.   Through working scientifically, the children will be able to:

  • recognise that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago
  • recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents
  • identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution

Curriculum Overview

 

English

This term we will be undertaking writing based on the fairy tale Little Red Riding Hood - but with a twist! We will be asking students to write their own version of the famous fairy tale but make their own twists - will it be set in the future? Will it be set in the past? Is Red Riding Hood really the villain?

 

We will be using this as an opportunity to get students back into the practice of writing. We will be asking them to focus on using the correct punctuation and to revise the sentence structures that we have been developing their understanding of in the previous Autumn term,

 

We will also focusing on handwriting.

 

Maths

This term, we will be spending the first few weeks revising calculation strategies and multiplication & division facts.  We will then  be moving on to applying our understanding of angles to everyday situations.

 

RE

In preparation for Holy Week and in the season of Lent, we will be exploring the Eucharist, and understanding that the Eucharist is a memorial which keeps the memory of the sacrifices that Christ made for us all alive. We will be reflecting upon the events surrounding Holy Week leading up to the death and resurrection of Christ and how this impacts on our own lives and the choices that we make.   Year 6 will be leading our Stations of the Cross reflection.

 

Topic

Spring Term 2: Introduction to HTML

In the final three weeks of Spring Term 2, we will be learning basic skills in using HMTL code to build our own websites!

 

Science

We will be studying light in science this half term. We will be learning:

  • How some things produce light and some reflect it. 
  • How shadows are formed. 
  • How light travels in straight lines.

Curriculum Focus

Religion

 

At the beginning of November, year six will be looking at remembrance and taking part in a collective worship to commemorate this we will taking part in a whole year group collective worship.  We also  be learning about the importance of unity, respect, peace and friendship by making and studying Peace Malas.  Towards the end of November, we will be looking at the topic of vocations and studying the season of  Advent and the importance of it in our Catholic lives.

 


English

 

In English, we will be developing our reading, writing and grammar skills through our Macbeth unit. In Maths, we will be developing the children's knowledge, fluency, reasoning and application of these focuses through greater depth activities and problem solving. During this half term, we will be developing our fluency in adding and subtracting fractions, multiplying and dividing fractions, fractions of amounts, ordering fractions and looking at the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages.

Science

In Science,the children will be learning all about animals, including humans, We will learn  about the circulatory system and how we can affect how well it works.  

 

Topic

 

In Topic, the focus will be on the World at war - beginning with looking  at the life in the trenches during World War 1.  We will be looking at the events that led up to the outbreak of war and the conditions the soldiers faced in the trenches and tunnels.  The children  will have opportunities to look at artefacts from the war and make inferences from them. 

Home Learning

 

Home learning will be celebrated each week with a focus being set through the Seesaw application.  The expectation  is of one quality piece of work completed each week.

 

In addition to this the children - to help them prepare for their maths SATs - have been given login details to an excellent, free online tutoring service, MyMaths. https://www.mymaths.co.uk/  Work will be set on a weekly basis following the children's progression through the year 6 maths curriculum, it also allows them to revisit work that they have found difficult or they can challenge themselves with extension activities. It is our expectation that this work is completed on time. 

Arithmetic tests will be completed each Monday morning and your child will be required to edit their mistakes at home and return them to school by Friday at the latest.

 

There is an expectation that the children read for 1/2 an hour every night as a minimum.  Pupils will return their book every Thursday so that staff can assess their progress.

 

Pupils have been given access to Spelling shed and Reading eggs. There is an expectation that pupils will use these applications every week.

  

(Please let the school know if for whatever reason you are unable to access MYMaths at home and we will try to make alternative arrangements for your child)

 

Home learning is essential if your child is to achieve all that they are capable of.  Expectations are high and a routine needs to be kept to to ensure that they complete all tasks set and hand them in on time this will help to reduce their test anxiety as it will remove the need for 'cramming' as the SATs approach.
