Theme 1: Go with the flow


The Big Idea

Your body is the most valuable thing you will ever own. It’s your job to keep your body fit and healthy because it has to last you a lifetime! We are going to find out how best you can do that.


In English, we’ll be finding out about:

  • Significant authors (Y5)
  • Poetic style (Y5)
  • Fiction genres (Y6)
  • Argument (Y6)
  • Authors and text (Y6)

In Maths, we’ll be finding out about:

  • Mental addition and subtraction
  • Subtraction by counting back and finding the difference
  • Mental multiplication and division; using squares, factors and tests of divisibility
  • Multiplying and dividing 3 digit numbers by single digit numbers using informal written methods
  • Shape and data handling: symmetry, parallel and perpendicular lines, classifying 2D and 3D shapes

In Physical Education, we’ll be:

  • Exploring the range of ways in which we can improve our physical fitness
  • Practising enjoyable activities that help us to become fitter
  • Taking regular exercise to see whether it makes a measurable difference to our fitness

In Art, we’ll be:

  • Looking at the ways artists have represented people and their activities
  • Recording ourselves and our activities

In Science, we’ll be:

  • Investigating measures of our fitness
  • Enquiring into diet and health
  • Critically examining the evidence we collect
  • Learning more about changes to our bodies that take place as we grow
  • Learning more about our bodies and how we can keep them in good condition

In International, we’ll be finding out:

  • Finding out how people around the world keep fit and healthy

Theme 2: Making the news


The Big Idea

We are processing more news and information than any other generation before us. Now, more than ever, we need to understand how best to interpret and use these opportunities to share information with an audience, so that we can become skilled and responsible 21st century communicators.


In English, we’ll be finding out about:

  • Film narrative (Y5)
  • Classic narrative poems (Y5)
  • Journalistic writing (Y6)
  • The power of imagery (Y6)

In Maths, we’ll be finding out about:

  • Mental addition and subraction
  • Written addition of 3 and 4 digit numbers
  • Mental multiplication and division
  • Written multiplication and division
  • Problem solving, reasoning and explaining
  • Shape: symmetry, co-ordinates, reflection and translation

In History, we’ll be finding out:

  • How news and information was communicated in the past
  • About the key inventions that have helped us to communicate
  • How news reporting has changed through time
  • About news as a source for finding out about the past

In ICT, we’ll be finding out:

  • How we can crop and resize images to create a photo story
  • How we can edit news stories to suit an online website

In Technology, we’ll be finding out:

  • How we can storyboard and film our own news report

In Society, we’ll be finding out:

  • About photojournalism and its impact on the lives of well-known people

In International, we’ll be finding out:

  • How an event/crisis is reported in the news
  • About current news from our host country and home countries
