The Big Idea

Some of you are lucky enough to have had the chance to live in more than one country. You can talk about your ‘host country’ and ‘home country’. You will have learned so much from this experience – let’s find out what you know and what more there is to learn…

 

In English, we’ll be finding out about:

  • Stories from other cultures (Y5)
  • Instructions (Y5)
  • Historical Stories (Y6)
  • Poetry and performance (Y6)
  • Formal and impersonal writing (Y6)


In Maths, we’ll be finding out about:

  • Place value
  • Ordering, comparing and rounding numbers
  • Reasoning and explaining
  • Mental multiplication and division
  • Fractions, ratio and proportion
  • Mental addition and subtraction
  • Handling data: frequency tables, pictograms, bar charts


In Geography, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to locate the host and home countries
  • How these countries are connected
  • What these countries are like
  • How they are similar and different


In History, we’ll be finding out:

  • The history of our host and home countries
  • About history from people, photographs and maps
  • About history from museums and books
  • About history from buildings and architecture


In Society, we’ll be finding out:

  • If the host/home countries are in the news
  • About issues that affect the host/home countries


In International, we’ll be finding out:

  • What things we have brought to the host country
  • How the host and home countries have worked together


Theme 2: Express yourself

 

The Big Idea

Our feelings are complicated and changing. Sometimes we feel like we are ‘on top of the world’ but at other times we feel sad without really understanding why. The way we are feeling affects our behaviour and the behaviour of people around us. We are going to find out why we have different feelings and whether animals have feelings too.

 

In English, we’ll be finding out about:

  • Narrative - older literature (Y5)
  • Recounts (Y5)
  • Poetry and performance (Y5)
  • Biography and autobiography (Y6)
  • Short stories with flash backs (Y6)
  • Finding a voice (Y6)


In Maths, we’ll be finding out about:

  • Subtraction, including finding the difference
  • Written addition of 3-digit numbers
  • Problem solving
  • Multiplying and dividing 2 and 3 digit numbers by single digit numbers
  • Using a calculator
  • Shape: 2D shapes and angles
  • Measures: Draw and measure lines to nearest millimetre, area and perimeter


In Society, we’ll be finding out:

  • How the way we feel has an affect on other people
  • How to deal with bullying
  • What makes us happy/unhappy
  • What we feel about our school


In Science, we’ll be finding out:

  • If feelings come from the heart or the brain
  • If animals have feelings and emotions


In Technology, we’ll be finding out:

  • How advertising can change the way we feel about certain products
  • If we can design a product to make us feel relaxed


In Art, we’ll be finding out:

  • How feelings and emotions can inspire artists
  • What local artists feel about the home or host country
  • How we can show our feelings through art


In Music, we’ll be finding out:

  • How musicians use feelings and emotions in their music
  • How music can affect our feelings
  • How we can control our feelings through music


In International, we’ll be finding out:

  • How feelings are expressed around the world
  • How extreme negative feelings can lead to war
