Theme 1: The Circus

 

The Circus is coming to town

Have you heard the saying ‘laughter is the best medicine’? Laughing and having fun are such an important part of our lives. We all love being entertained and enjoying ourselves. For a very long time, the circus has been a special place where people, from many parts of the world, go to be entertained, laugh and have fun

 

In English, we’ll be finding out about:

  • Labels, Lists and Captions
  • Poems on a theme
  • Stories with familiar settings
  • Clowns, Quentin Blake


In Art, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to draw faces and understand expressions
  • About the work of artists who have painted pictures about the circus


In History, we’ll be finding out:

  • What circuses were like in the past
  • About some of the people who made circuses famous
  • How circuses have changed over the years


In Science, we’ll be finding out:

  • Which materials would make a waterproof tent
  • Which materials to use for circus costumes
  • About forces – pushes and pulls in circus acts


In Technology, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to put up a tent
  • How to plan and make circus tents for soft toys


In Geography, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to draw maps and plans of a circus
  • How to use maps and atlases to find out about the countries some circus animals come from 


In Physical Education, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to use juggling balls
  • How to balance and make movements used in circus performances


In Society, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to stay safe in busy places
  • What it’s like to be a circus artist


In Music, we’ll be finding out:

  • About music for the circus
  • How to compose and write rhythms and tunes about circus performers


In ICT, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to draw a plan for our own circus
  • How to make tickets and a poster for our own circus


In International, we’ll be finding out:

  • What different people think about using animals in the circus
  • What the circus of the future might look like


Theme 2: It's Shocking

 

The Big Idea

Electricity is an energy that makes things work. It flows along wires inside our house and classroom. Our lights, TVs, computers, mobile phones, cars, and many other things use electricity. Did you know that thunder and lightning is a type of electricity? Did you know your hair can have electricity too? There are lots of other exciting facts about electricity that we are going to discover together over the next few weeks.

  • Fairy Tales
  • Explanation text
  • Stories with predictable patterns


In Science, we’ll be finding out:

  • About static electricity
  • How we can use static electricity
  • What battery-operated toys can do
  • How to make our own electrical circuit
  • Electricity at home and in the classroom
  • About the dangers of electricity


In Technology, we’ll be finding out:

  • How to design and make a torch


In History, we’ll be finding out:

  • What we did before electricity


In International, we’ll be finding out:

  • How people in different countries use electricity
